At your expense of course and under your own steam, but if you must have that level of fader performance, then that avenue is open to you.

But it turns out that all 3 can be replaced by full long-bodied Innofaders. The cross fader however is nice and smooth and eminently scratchable.

I’d better make sure that I’ve finished the review and completed photography before I attempt that particular test to destruction.įader update – all 3 are mini Innofaders, but the line faders have a decidedly stiffer feel. As Eric says in the video, they designed it to be thrown against a wall and still work. The rest however is very pleasing to the hand and eye. The expensive and highly polished aluminium faceplate is of course a finger print hazard, and in certain lighting conditions it’s going to dazzle. But there’s an elevated feel of quality here, one that pushes it some way above the feel of the S2 and S4. So first impressions – pure NI look and feel. The 2+2 channel functionality really does mimic what a lot of 4 channel users already do on their club mixers. Of course, it comes with a handful of new features and innovations that put it some way above the rest of the 2 channel mixer market, and knocks on the door of the 4 channel crowd too. And for me, while this can be used as a standalone mixer, the Z2 is much more of a Traktor controller capable of handing analogue inputs and HID CDJs. Yes it can do that sort of thing, but this has a lot more going for it than simple turntablist manoeuvres. Rather than filming a scratch demo, NI delivered Eric Goldstein (from the first teaser) to show us the key elements of their lovely new Traktor Kontrol Z2 mixer/controller.įirst things first – NI wish it to be known that despite appearances, the Kontrol Z2 is considerably more than a 2 channel battle mixer. In that capacity, we think it currently stands alone.Having covered off the first big lump of hardware announced just before BPM, it’s time to take an intimate look at the other. Versatile and keenly priced, the Z2 is hugely powerful, appealing to DJs across all genres who have neither the need nor inclination to run four simultaneous decks with eight remix channels but who still want powerful Scratch control over two decks and to throw in loops. There are far too many clever little touches to list here, but one particular favourite is the ability to mix vinyl or CDs as audio while still using Traktor's effects.Īlso noteworthy is the auxiliary input, which lets you plug in a fail-safe so that if the unthinkable happened and Traktor crashed, you could just hit play on a connected playback device and save the day.

The Traktor Kontrol Z2 is an awesome bit of kit and a stunning entry into the DJ mixer market for NI. The whole thing is clearly geared towards DJs who bring their own kit to the club: the crossfade curve control and headphone sockets (1/4" and 1/8") are both located on the front edge rather than the top panel, making the Z2 unsuitable for recessed installation. "The Traktor Kontrol Z2 is an awesome bit of kit and a stunning entry into the DJ mixer market for NI" The central panel, meanwhile, hosts track loading and browsing controls.Īnother great feature is the Allen and Heath-style filter dial on each deck (like the EQ, it's available in analogue mode, too), dialling in high-pass filtering when turned clockwise and a low-pass filter in the anticlockwise direction. The four Remix Deck buttons also double as cue points for the main decks, and looping controls are available (the LED above the faders shows the current loop length), as are some useful effect controls. These are pretty much limited to playback only, though, so you'd need to attach a Traktor F1 controller (or two) for full control. For starters, it features two Remix channel strips, affording access to Traktor's much-respected real-time Remix Decks (a total of four Remix channels). Reassuringly heavy with a metal chassis, every knob, button and fader imparts a sense of firm, tough quality.Īs you'd expect, the Z2 goes some way beyond just the DJ mixer basics. It offers two channels, fed by either line or phono inputs, both with built in Traktor Scratch decoders (Traktor Scratch Mk2 vinyl and CDs are included), so whether you use CDJs or turntables, you can simply plug them in alongside your laptop (connected via the USB port), and even hook up external drives via the dual-port USB hub.Īlternatively, you can use it as an analogue mixer or swap between the two functions mid-set. Like all good scratch mixers, the Z2 hardware keeps things simple.

The included Traktor Pro software allows virtual DJing using a mouse, MIDI/QWERTY-mapped controls and control vinyl/CDs played via conventional decks. The Z2 hardware functions as a Traktor-centric MIDI controller, audio interface, scratch decoder and conventional analogue DJ mixer.
